Proclamation honoring in memoriam the life and legacy of Pittsburgh philanthropist Henry L. Hillman.

Body...

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh philanthropist Henry L. Hillman, one of the most generous and humble benefactors in the City of Pittsburgh’s history, passed away from this life on April 14, 2017, at the age of 98; and

WHEREAS, with his wife of more than 70 years, the late Elsie Hilliard Hillman, the Hillman name came to embody the highest ideals of contributing to the common good throughout southwestern Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hillman led the efforts of Pittsburgh’s first renaissance, helping to save, rebuild and transform the City of Pittsburgh from an industrial city into a 21st Century city; and

WHEREAS, using his personal fortune and through the Hillman Foundation, started by his father in 1951, and the Henry L. Hillman Foundation, many of his most generous donations were in science, technology and medicine, fields in which Mr. Hillman had a keen interest. A longtime supporter of the arts, Mr. Hillman donated millions over the years to the Carnegie Museum, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the Pittsburgh Symphony; and

WHEREAS, a deeply private man preferring to avoid the spotlight, Mr. Hillman reluctantly attached his name to major projects he funded including the Hillman Library of the University of Pittsburgh, the Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Hillman Cancer Center of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Hillman Center for Performing Arts at Shady Side Academy, Hillman Center for Future-Generation Technologies at Carnegie Mellon University and the Hillman Center for Pediatric Transplantation at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hillman and his late wife, Elsie received dozens of award and honorary degrees over the years for their generous donations of time and money;
