Proclamation congratulating the Borough of Sharpsburg upon the occasion of its 175th anniversary.
Body...
WHEREAS, a celebration marking the 175th anniversary of the Borough of Sharpsburg in Allegheny County is being held on Saturday, June 10, 2017; and
WHEREAS, the early settlement, five miles east of Pittsburgh along the Allegheny River, was named for Mr. James Sharp, who purchased 200 acres of land from the Seneca Indian leader, Guyasuta; and
WHEREAS, Sharpsburg was incorporated as a borough in 1842; and
WHEREAS, schools, churches, industries, residential development, nonprofit organizations, local government and the riverfront have flourished in the decades which followed; and
WHEREAS, the borough’s population in 2014 was recorded as 3,417 people; and
WHEREAS, the Allegheny County Council joins in celebrating the borough’s rich history, proudly noting its origin on the western frontier and the growth and quality of life sustained there from its incorporation to the present day;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Allegheny County Council does hereby commemorate the 175th anniversary of the establishment of the Borough of Sharpsburg.
