Title...

Proclamation recognizing the teachers and students at Washington Elementary School in the Mt. Lebanon School District for creating a wrist brace for third-grade cello student Finn Maxwell.

Body...

WHEREAS, Finn Maxwell, a third-grader at Washington Elementary School in the Mt. Lebanon School District, has a physical condition which makes it difficult for him to hold his cello bow; and

WHEREAS, Washington Elementary School teachers Diane Sadar (Orchestra) and Rae Ann Macosko (Librarian), along with Mt. Lebanon High School Practical Arts Department teachers, Duane Lewis and Larry Johnson, worked with fifth-grader Kate Mooney and fourth-grader Sigmond Kukla to create a unique grip support to enable Finn to hold his cello bow with ease; and

WHEREAS, the teachers and students used the school’s Makerbot 3-D printer, a machine allowing the creation of a physical object from a three-dimensional digital model by laying down many thin layers of a material in succession. The orange grip support allows Finn to loosen his hold on the bow and relax, creating a therapeutic effect for his arm; and

WHEREAS, this Council applauds the teachers and students for creating a real-world solution using Science, Technology, Engineering and Design, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM);

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Allegheny County Council does hereby commend Diane Sadar, Rae Ann Macosko, Duane Lewis, Larry Johnson, Kate Mooney and Sigmond Kukla for their inventive creation of a “bow holder” wrist brace benefitting Finn Maxwell.
