Proclamation congratulating the Mattress Factory Museum upon the occasion of its 40th anniversary.
Body...
WHEREAS, the Mattress Factory, located on Pittsburgh’s North Side, was founded in 1977 to support in-residence artists and facilitate on-site installation and performance art; and
WHEREAS, the Mattress Factory displays artwork created by local, national and international artists and has made significant contributions to Pittsburgh’s globally recognized arts and culture scene; and
WHEREAS, the positive impact of the Mattress Factory’s presence in the Pittsburgh region was documented in an economic impact study conducted by Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for Economic Development, which concluded that the museum “makes important contributions to local workforce development, neighborhood redevelopment, cultural tourism, artistic entrepreneurship, and economic growth”; and
WHEREAS, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Mattress Factory’s annual Urban Garden Party, and in honor of the museum’s 40th anniversary, the Mattress Factory has installed a major public light display on the roof of its space that can be viewed from all around Pittsburgh and a Skyspace art piece donated by acclaimed artist James Turrell;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize the creativity and inspiration that the Mattress Factory brings to Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, and we join in celebration of the museum’s 40th Anniversary.
