Motion of the Council of Allegheny County authorizing Council Members DeWitt Walton and Paul Klein to conduct up to four public information sessions at locations to be determined throughout Allegheny County in order to aid them in gathering information to be used in evaluating the potential for drafting an ordinance relating to the creation of a County citizen’s police review board.

Whereas, at Council’s July 3, 2018 regular meeting, Council Member DeWitt Walton expressed a desire to gather information relation to the concept of a County citizens’ police review board; and
Whereas, Mr. Walton noted that he wishes to pursue this avenue in light of recent events within Allegheny County and nationwide which have served to stress the importance of transparency, accountability, and trust in the course of interactions between various law enforcement entities and the populations which they serve and protect; and
Whereas, it is Council Members Walton and Klein's desire to be as inclusive as possible as he gathers information, and therefore wishes to gather information at multiple locations throughout the County, some of which are not located within their respective Council Districts; and
Whereas, because it is not typical for Council Members elected by district to conduct events of this type in other districts, it is the desire of Council to acknowledge that the sessions will be taking place and to provide authorization to Mr. Walton and Mr. Klein to conduct them;
NOW THEREFORE, IT IS MOVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY,
that Council Members DeWitt Walton and Paul Klein are hereby authorized to conduct up to four public information sessions, at locations to be determined throughout Allegheny County. The purpose of these sessions will be to aid them in gathering information to be used in evaluating the potential for drafting an ordinance relating to the creation of a County citizen’s police review board.
