Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. The 3-million-member organization serves girls from every corner of the United States and its territories. Girl Scouts of the USA also serves American girls and their classmates attending American or international schools overseas in 90 countries; and

     WHEREAS, the Girl Scout’s Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouts. This prestigious and most difficult to earn award is only open to girls in high schools. As a Gold Award Girl Scout, one is challenged to change the world; and

     WHEREAS, Nadine Oury, a Senior at Winchester Thurston School and a member of troop 50488 in Franklin Park, PA, was ceremonially presented the Gold Award Girl Scout at The Chadwick on September 30, along with other high school girls who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects that address important community needs; and

     WHEREAS, roughly two years ago, Nadine began her Gold Award project at the Linbrook Woodlands Conservation Area. Her project’s goal was to encourage people to learn about and enjoy the newly protected conservation area while combining going outdoors for health and enjoyment with education; and

     WHEREAS, partnered with Allegheny Landtrust, Nadine established a 3-mile loop trail on the property that passes close to several distinct habitats and created a map highlighting key features that people could experience. Once the trail was completed, she conducted a Habitat Hike with Venture Outdoors for Earth Day. Participants, ranging from 7 to 72 years old, learned about connections between wildlife species, the impact of human activity and health benefits of visiting natural areas; and

     WHEREAS, Nadine hopes that forming new relationships with the natural environment will stimulate greater interest in preserving wild spaces for all to enjoy. Also, she hopes that this experience will give girls important leadership skills, teaching them to seek out the work that needs doing in the world;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Council Member Cindy Kirk, do hereby commend and recognize Nadine Oury upon receiving the Girl Scout Gold Award, and we congratulate her for dedicating time, leadership, creativity and effort to making her community better.
