Proclamation celebrating the Mon Valley Initiative’s 30th Anniversary.

WHEREAS, on Thursday, October 18, 2018, the Mon Valley Initiative will celebrate its 30th Anniversary with a special celebration at the award-winning Sunset Room in Elizabeth Township, Pennsylvania;
WHEREAS, stirred from the fall of the steel industry in the Mon Valley in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, major local business and industry leaders aggressively began looking for a solution to the problems in the steel industry. This group of local business and industry leaders made up the “Allegheny Conference on Community Development”; and
WHEREAS, the group focused on strategic investment and how to address the devastating economic decline, especially in the Mon Valley. Through the “Allegheny Conference on Community Development” the “Mon Valley Development Team” was formed in 1987; however, a year later there were talks about forming a regional coalition, and as a result the Mon Valley Initiative was formed; and
WHEREAS, today, the Mon Valley Initiative serves as both a support network both for independent community development corporations, as well as, a community development corporation and service provider. Even though the factories in the Mon Valley have been demolished, the people still need sufficient housing, financial assistance, life coaching, job skill development, and community expansion; and
WHEREAS, for the last 30 years, the Mon Valley Initiative has been dedicated to its mission of “working together to unite the communities and restore the economic vitality of the Mon Valley;”
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Allegheny County Council Member Paul Klein, Bob Macey, Charles Martoni, and All Members of Council, do hereby celebrate the Mon Valley Initiative’s 30th Anniversary, and we commend them for being dedicated to developing strategic investment and economic strategies in the Mon Valley.
