WHEREAS, in the United States, congenital heart disease affects 1 in 120 babies born in the United States, making heart defects the most common birth defect. Congenital, meaning existing at birth, heart disease is a heart abnormality that occurs as a baby’s heart is developing during pregnancy; and
WHEREAS, when only 18 weeks pregnant, Danielle McKain was told that her son was going to be born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), which means he would be born without the left side of his heart; and
WHEREAS, on September 27, 2010, Jameson McKain was born at West Penn Hospital. Over the next four months, Jameson would spend all his time in The Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh having extensive heart surgeries, the first of which he had at five days old; and
WHEREAS, on June 24, 2011, at the age of 11 months old, Jameson was placed on the heart transplant list and two months later he received his heart; and
WHEREAS, to help spread awareness, raise funds, and educate others about congenital heart disease, Jameson’s mother created Jameson’s Army, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping children and their families at The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, The Children's Home and Lemieux Foundation, Your Child's Place and other medical facilities that are touched by congenital heart disease; and
WHEREAS, on April 12, 2019, Jameson’s Army will hold its 8th Annual “Green Heart Gala” at PNC Park. This annual event is expecting to have 300 guests; all of whom want to raise awareness, funds and educate others on one of the most common birth defects that babies are born with;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Allegheny County Council Member Tom Baker, do hereby declare Friday, April 12, 2019 to be Jameson’s Army Day in Allegheny County, and I encourage all resident of Allegheny C...
