Proclamation honoring the life, memory and legacy of former Tarentum Borough mayor Carl Magnetta Jr.

WHEREAS, Allegheny County Council does hereby honor the life of Carl Magnetta Jr., the former mayor of Tarentum Borough, Pa; and

 

     WHEREAS, born in 1938 in New Kensington, PA. Carl always knew what he aspired to do with his life, help others; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 1964 at the age of 24, Carl was sworn into Tarentum Borough Council and served for 12 years. In 1977, he was appointed mayor and served for a year before he resigned due to conflict of interest with his job at the Valley News Dispatch; and


     WHEREAS, as years passed, Carl held various jobs. He worked for the Valley News Dispatch for over 24 years and was eventually promoted to promotion manager. After leaving the newspaper, Carl went to work as a district manager with the Allegheny County Housing Authority for several year. Also, from 1988 to 2013, the Magnetta family ran Joan’s Kiln Korner, a local ceramic and craft store; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 2002, Carl was elected to Tarentum Borough Council again, a seat he held for only seven years until he was elected mayor in 2009. As mayor, Carl acted with the best intention of the community in mind and worked successfully and strategically with the other council members and state legislators; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 2012, thanks to successful communication and collaboration with state Sen. Jim Brewster, Carl was able to obtain a $75,000 spray park in Riverview Memorial Park. This project is celebrated as one of the many significant contributions of former mayor Carl Magnetta Jr.; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 2017 after 30 years of serving Tarentum Borough, first as a councilman and then as mayor, Carl lost his bid for re-election. He described the defeat as a “blessing” because it gave him an opportunity to spend time with his family; and

 

     WHEREAS, only a little over a year after losing re-election, Carl Magnetta Jr. passed away from this life on July 1, 2018 at the age of 79. Carl’s unwavering dedication for Tarentum Borough and its residents was an attribute that come few and far in-between; and

 

     WHEREAS, on Saturday, April 13, 2019, the Tarentum Borough Recreation Board will honor and recognize the life and legacy of former mayor Carl Magnetta Jr. at River View Memorial Park and a bronze plaque will be dedicated in his honor;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Allegheny County Council Member Nicholas Futules, do hereby honor the life, memory and legacy of former mayor Carl Magnetta Jr., and we extend condolences to his family and friends.
