Proclamation celebrating the 23rd Annual Martha’s Run that is held in memoriam of FBI Special Agent Martha Dixon.

     WHEREAS, Special Agent Martha Dixon was born in January 1959 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Several years after receiving her Bachelor of Sciences Degree in Biology from the University of Pittsburgh, Special Agent Dixon entered on duty with the FBI. Her first office assignment was Knoxville, TN., where she was the first female agent in the field office to be certified as a SWAT team member; and

 

     WHEREAS, on November 22, 1994, FBI Special Agent Martha Dixon, 35, was killed in the line of duty while confronting an armed assailant inside the Washington D.C.’s police headquarters building. On that day, Special Agent Dixon, along with two other law enforcement officers lost their lives; and 

 

     WHEREAS, since Special Agent Dixon’s passing, her family created the Martha Fund, a 501(c)(3) charitable trust that hosts several annual events in her name to help pay for a variety of projects in the community; and

 

     WHEREAS, on Saturday, April 13, 2019, the Martha Fund will hold its 23rd Annual Martha’s Run. Inspired by Special Agent Dixon’s passion for running, Martha’s Run is a fundraiser that consists of a 10k race, 2-mile run, and a 1-mile run/walk that is open to all ages. The run helps raise the awareness of Special Agent Dixon’s sacrifice and help raise funds for the foundation established in her name;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, Allegheny County Council Members Tom Baker, Sam DeMarco and Sue Means do hereby recognize the extreme heroism and dedication to country portrayed by Special Agent Martha Dixon, and I encourage the citizens of Allegheny County to remember and honor her life by learning more about the foundations established in her memory.
