Proclamation congratulating Borough of Castle Shannon as it celebrates 100 years since its incorporation.

WHEREAS, a celebration recognizing the 100 years of Castle Shannon Borough in Allegheny County will be held on Sunday, May 26, 2019; and
WHEREAS, a community known for its strategic location on the Allegheny County light rail transit system, Castle Shannon has been settled since 1784 by families of a mostly Scotch-Irish lineage in search of farmland and timber; and
WHEREAS, David Strawbridge, the most prominent farmer in the area during that time, commemorated his Irish roots by naming his farm Castle Shanahan, which eventually evolved into “Shannon”; and
WHEREAS, in 1872, the Pittsburgh and Castle Shannon Railroad line was completed, providing a direct link to Pittsburgh and what was then - village of Castle Shannon. For two years, development was stimulated by providing free transportation and lumber transport to anyone building a home; and
WHEREAS, due to the booming coal and floral industry in the late 19th century, the new commerce and growth in population ultimately led to the borough incorporation in 1919; and
WHEREAS, today, Castle Shannon Borough covers 1.6 square miles and has a total population of 8,316; the borough is known for its close-knit community, and we are excited to join with borough officials this year to celebrate this wonderful borough’s 100th anniversary; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we, Allegheny County Council Member John Palmiere, do hereby congratulate and join in celebration with Castle Shannon Borough, as it celebrates 100 years since its incorporation. On behalf of Allegheny County Council, we wish the Borough residents, officials and businesses all the best and look forward to learning about, and participating in, the great things that the Borough will offer throughout its next 100 years.
