Proclamation recognizing the African American Heritage Day Parade.

WHEREAS, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots.” This quote by Marcus Garvey perfectly illustrates the importance of understanding and embracing the past in order to create a fruitful, more perfect future for us, as well as for coming generations; and
WHEREAS, the African American Heritage Day Parade Association was founded in 1987, creating the parade as a community unity effort in honor, celebration, and recognition of African American heritage and its contributions to society; and
WHEREAS, this recognition is achieved through educational activities, scholarships, research, and collections of African American records through video, audio, and publications; and
WHEREAS, the annual African American Heritage Day Parade, occurring each summer, encourages the display of various talents demonstrated through the media of bands, marching groups, and floats with performance awards given out in various categories as well as certificates, recognition, and appreciation given to major contributors and supporters;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Allegheny County Council Member DeWitt Walton, do hereby recognize the African American Heritage Day Parade as a worthy celebration of the people of our county as well as the contributions, achievements, and talents of the African American community as a whole.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto caused the Seal of the County of Allegheny to be affixed this 10th day of August 2019.
