WHEREAS, YMCA of Great Pittsburgh’s Camp AIM, a six-week summer program for children and young adults based in Bethel Park, is celebrating its 50th anniversary since its foundation in 1968; and

WHEREAS, Camp AIM spans 17 school districts and over 50 communities in Allegheny and Washington Counties, becoming one of the largest day camps for special needs children in Allegheny County. In the past, the camp has taken place at Upper St Clair, Bethel Park, numerous churches, and was recently held at Carnegie Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, Camp AIM has provided nearly 4,000 people with physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and communication challenges with opportunities to Achieve, support to become Independent and encouragement to become Motivated (AIM). By the end of the program, participants have acquired vital life skills; and

WHEREAS, providing services to between 120 and 150 children every summer, Camp AIM combines developmental skills with recreational activities to create an enjoyable experience. Activities include aquatics, physical education, home economics, music, and art. Campers are provided with opportunities for interaction and other projects depending on individual needs; and

WHEREAS, Camp AIM has become a catalyst for countless careers in special education for staff members and has inspired many to continue to pursue work with children. Additionally, it has led to the development of meaningful relationships between students, families and staff members; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, Allegheny County Council Members Pat Catena and Sue Means, do hereby celebrate and congratulate the committed and compassionate staff of the YMCA’s Camp AIM for 50 years of success, and we commend this summer program for taking the action needed to develop a flourishing and inclusive environment for individuals to grow and learn.
