Proclamation honoring 150 years of Leet Township.

body

WHEREAS, Leet Township in Allegheny County is celebrating 150 years of their formation and their division from Sewickley Township on June 26, 1869; and

WHEREAS, located between the Ohio River and the Ohio Township line, with the original boundaries of the township including what are now Edgeworth, Leetsdale and part of Sewickley Heights, Leet Township was named after Jonathan Leet, a surveyor who laid out the town of Beaver Falls, whose brother worked on the staff of George Washington during the Revolutionary War; and

WHEREAS after the Civil War, the residents decided to file a petition to form a separate municipality because they were upset at the level of services they received from Sewickley Township; and

WHEREAS, today, Leet Township covers 1.6 square miles and has a total population of 1,634; the township is famous for being the site of D.T. Watson Rehabilitation Hospital, where Dr. Jonas Salk first used his revolutionary polio vaccine, and we are excited to join in this celebration of this wonderful township’s 150th anniversary; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Allegheny County Council Member Cindy Kirk, do hereby congratulate and join in celebration with Leet Township, as it celebrates 150 years since its incorporation. On behalf of Allegheny County Council, we wish the Township residents, officials and businesses all the best and look forward to learning about, and participating in, the great things that the Township will offer throughout its next 150 years.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto caused the Seal of the County of Allegheny to be affixed this 12th day of August 2019.
