body

     WHEREAS, Chatham University, an exceptional university located in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA is celebrating their 150th anniversary this year; and

     WHEREAS, in 1869, Chatham University was originally founded as the Pennsylvania Female College and provided women with an education comparable to that which men could receive at the time. It was established on the principles of access and equity by ensuring that women were able to obtain the education that they were being denied access to by the educational system of the mid-1800’s; and

     WHEREAS, in 1890, the institution was renamed as the Pennsylvania College for Women. The name was modified once more in 1955 to Chatham College in honor of William Pitt. In 2007, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania granted Chatham university status which sparked Chatham’s newest tradition, University Day. In 2008, Chatham University expanded and created a second campus in the Eastside; and

     WHEREAS, Chatham University offers over 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the areas of sustainability; health and wellness; business and communications; and the arts and sciences. They boast several centers, including: the Women’s Institute, the Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship, Pennsylvania Center for Women in Politics, and the Center for Regional Agriculture, Food, and Transformation (CRAFT); and

     WHEREAS, Chatham University has since furthered their accomplishments by becoming a fully coed institution and growing enrollment to 2,200 students. Those students are fortunate to be receiving a high-quality education at such an outstanding university; and

     WHEREAS, building lives of purpose, value, and fulfilling work are the values that Chatham University’s mission statement is based upon. With those values guiding the University and its students, the graduates are bound to be well-rounded, thoughtful, and engaged citizens in the community;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Allegheny County Council Member Paul Klein, do hereby recognize Chatham University for celebrating their 150th anniversary, and I commend them for their remarkable educational efforts and commitment to an equitable education in the heart of Shadyside.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto caused the Seal of the County of Allegheny to be affixed this 12th day of November 2019.
