Proclamation declaring the month of February as American Heart Month in Allegheny County.

body

     WHEREAS, cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of all Americans, claiming more than 840,000 lives; and

     WHEREAS, American Heart Month was founded in 1963 to make individuals more aware of the “staggering physical and economic loss” due to cardiovascular diseases, as quoted by President Lyndon B. Johnson; and

     WHEREAS, almost half of all adults in the United States face increased risk of heart disease for various reasons. During American Heart Month, individuals must take steps to reduce the risk associated with heart disease in themselves and in those they care about by encouraging healthy eating, physical activity, and discouraging the use of tobacco; and

     WHEREAS, the American Heart Association, along with the organization’s Go Red for Women movement, has impacted the lives of thousands of men, women and children in the Pittsburgh area by supporting cardiovascular research, professional and community education and advocacy efforts; and

     WHEREAS, on Friday, February 7, 2020, in celebration of National Wear Red Day, women across America wore red to help raise awareness that heart disease is the number one health threat to women;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we, Allegheny County Council Members Cindy Kirk, Tom Baker, Sam DeMarco, Nick Futules, Robert Palmosina, Anita Prizio, and…, do hereby proclaim the month of February as American Heart Month in Allegheny County, and we thank the American Heart Association and Go Red for Women for its continued efforts to fight this epidemic to build a brighter future for the families of Allegheny County.
