WHEREAS, in the late 19th century, America celebrated its first Labor Day when a group of industrial workers in New York joined in common purpose to celebrate their contributions to our country. As the workers grew in numbers, they went without their daily pay to march for their cause. Those actions ultimately caused a labor movement that has inspired generations of Americans since; and
WHEREAS, on Labor Day we honor and celebrate the resiliency of Allegheny County’s workers and their families who fuel economic prosperity and have taken our county to new heights; and
WHEREAS, Allegheny County’s talented workers and job seekers play a significant role in attracting new businesses and industries to their communities and in retaining established employers who will help strengthen our economy for the future and to compete in a global economy; and
WHEREAS, Allegheny County is committed to helping create job opportunities for its citizens and fostering safe, healthy and productive work environments for employees and employers;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Members of Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, hereby recognize September 7, 2020 as Labor Day in Allegheny County, and we honor and recognize the workers of Allegheny County for their resiliency. This Council is committed to standing with the men and women of Allegheny County in order to ensure that all workers are given the opportunity to thrive in their workplace.
