Proclamation declaring September 2020 as National Recovery Month in Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, every day, millions of Americans prove that recovery from alcohol and substance use disorders is possible -- yet at the same time, millions more are struggling with the disease of addiction; and
WHEREAS, substance use disorder, commonly known as addiction, is a disease of the brain, and many misconceptions surrounding it have contributed to harmful stigmas that can prevent individuals from seeking the treatment they need; and
WHEREAS, preventing and overcoming mental health and substance use disorders is essential to achieving healthy lifestyles, both physically and emotionally; and
WHEREAS, every person has inherent value and should have the opportunity to experience a life of recovery; and
WHEREAS, we must encourage relatives and friends of people with mental health and substance use disorders to implement preventive measures, recognize the signs of a problem, and guide those in need to appropriate treatment and recovery support services; and
WHEREAS, the month of September is National Recovery Month and September 30, 2020, is National Recovery Day; and
WHEREAS, this month’s theme is, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Celebrating Connections.” Focusing on reminding people in recovery and those who support them, that we all have victories to celebrate and things we may wish we had done differently; and
WHEREAS, during National Recovery Month, let us thank health care professionals, support groups, and all those dedicated to helping individuals in need find assistance and reclaim their lives;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Allegheny County Council Member Bethany Hallam, do hereby declare September 2020 as National Recovery Month in Allegheny County.
