Proclamation declaring April 4-10, 2021 to be National Library Week in Allegheny County.

     WHEREAS, libraries of all types are at the heart of their cities, towns, schools, and campuses, serving their communities; and

 

WHEREAS, libraries are accessible and inclusive places that foster a sense of belonging and community;

WHEREAS, today’s libraries and their services extend far beyond the four walls of a building and everyone is welcome to use their resources; and

 

WHEREAS, for people lacking broadband at home, libraries provide access to computers and wi-fi, even checking out internet hotspots and laptops; and

 

WHEREAS, libraries strive to develop and maintain programs and collections that are as diverse as the populations they serve and ensure equity of access for all; and

 

WHEREAS, we recognize librarians as information professionals who provide expertise, services and guidance for patrons to access credible sources and material, making their own informed decisions about the world today; and

 

WHEREAS, in times of crisis, libraries, librarians, and library workers play an invaluable role in supporting their communities both in person and virtually; and

 

WHEREAS, to adapt to our changing world, libraries are expanding their resources and continuing to meet the needs of their patrons; and

 

WHEREAS, libraries are cornerstones of democracy, promoting the free exchange of information and ideas for all; and

 

WHEREAS, libraries are a resource for all - regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity or socio-economic status; and

 

WHEREAS, America is celebrating National Library Week including April 6 as National Library Workers’ Day and the immeasurable contributions made by library workers; April 7 as National Bookmobile Day showing library services are not limited to their physical location; and April 8 as Take Action for Libraries Day encouraging community support for libraries; 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Allegheny County Council Member Tom Baker, do hereby proclaim National Library Week, April 4-10, 2021 in Allegheny County.  During this week, we encourage all residents to visit our libraries, and explore all that they offer to help move PA Forward™!
