Motion of the Council of Allegheny County expressing the concerns of Council relating to current construction at the Sheraton Station Square hotel.

body

WHEREAS, the historic Sheraton Station Square hotel, which has been the host of numerous union banquets and other events, has hired out-of-state, non-union contractors to do construction work at the facility; and,

WHEREAS, in addition, it was discovered that the hotel was illegally and dangerously working without the required permits from the City of Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh Department of Permits, Licensing and Inspections has charged Sheraton Station Square with three violations and issued an immediate Stop Work Order, which has been ignored by the hotel and its contractors; and,

WHEREAS, refusing to work without proper permits potentially places the workers in danger as they undertake their tasks, and could have the potential to harm future patrons if construction and/or maintenance has been performed improperly; and,

The Council of the County of Allegheny therefore hereby moves as follows:

Allegheny County Council hereby expresses its concern about acceptable business practices being ignored by Sheraton Station Square management, condemns the apparent disregard for the City of Pittsburgh’s permitting and regulatory requirements, and reaffirms Council’s support of our local unions and resident workers; and,

The Council hereby further moves that a copy of this motion shall be presented to the Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh.
