Proclamation recognizing the month of November as Native American Heritage Month in Allegheny County to commemorate the great cultures and accomplishments of the Native peoples.

WHEREAS, each November we celebrate Native American Heritage Month and the countless contributions of Native peoples past and present and honor the influence they have had on the advancement of our Nation; and
WHEREAS, Native Americans are leaders in every aspect of our society-- from the classroom, to the boardroom, to the battlefield and we renew our commitment to respecting each tribe's identity while ensuring equal opportunity to pursue the American dream.; and
WHEREAS, in paying tribute to Native American achievements, we must also acknowledge the parts of our shared history that have been marred by violence and tragic mistreatment. For centuries, Native Americans faced cruelty, injustice, and broken promises. As we work together to forge a brighter future, we cannot shy away from the difficult aspects of our past; and
WHEREAS, this month and every month, we honor the precious, strong, and enduring cultures and contributions of all Native Americans and recommit ourselves to fulfilling the full promise of our Nation together and we owe each of them and their families a debt of gratitude for their sacrifice and dedication; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Allegheny County Council Member Anita Prizio, do hereby recognize the month of November as Native American Heritage Month in Allegheny County to commemorate the great cultures and accomplishments of the Native peoples.
