Proclamation congratulating Mike Lange upon the occasion of his retirement from Pittsburgh Penguins radio play-by-play.

WHEREAS, Mike Lange, Pittsburgh Penguins radio play-by-play announcer, has retired after 50 years of broadcasting professional hockey; and
WHEREAS, a Sacramento, California native, Mike Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners in 1970; and
WHEREAS, from 1973-74, Mike Lange served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls and the Washington Diplomats before joining the Pittsburgh Penguins; and
WHEREAS, while the Hall of Fame announcer will retire from radio play-by-play, he will still remain a part of the team’s radio network, adding commentary and voice work on a limited basis; and
WHEREAS, over the years, Mike Lange received numerous accolades, notably, the Foster Hewitt award for broadcasting from the Hockey Hall of Fame for his unique and creative style, which includes colorful catch phrases when the Penguins score a goal, such as: “Buy Sam a drink and get his dog one, too!”; and
WHEREAS, Mike Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since; and
WHEREAS, Mike Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Allegheny County Council Member John Palmiere, do hereby recognize and congratulate Mike Lange upon the occasion of his retirement from Pittsburgh Penguins radio play-by-play, and we commend him for all that he has accomplished during his 50 years in sports broadcasting.
