Proclamation recognizing Katy Appleman upon receiving the Eagle Scout Award and congratulating her for being the first female eagle scout in the Laurel Highlands council.

WHEREAS, Katy Appleman, a senior at Shady Side Academy, became the first female eagle scout in the Laurel Highlands council; and

WHEREAS, during her sophomore year of high school, Katy joined Scouts BSA; and

WHEREAS, over the years, the Scouts BSA’s program has elevated Katy’s fascination with wilderness skills, deepened her understanding of what it means to be a citizen, and introduced her to a community of welcoming people from a variety of backgrounds, who share an appreciation for the outdoors; and

WHEREAS, Katy is passionate about Scout BSA’s strong and supportive community, as well as, the rare learning environment. Scout BSA has equipped Katy with tools to further her passions, make new connections, and positively shape her character and community in several ways; and

WHEREAS, one of the ways Scouts BSA has benefited Katy is equipping her with leadership skills. For two terms, Katy was elected to Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) of her troop. She worked side-by-side with other sister troop’s SPL to plan meetings and brainstorm activities to keep scouts engaged during the pandemic; and

WHEREAS, Katy and other SPLs worked to teach different merit badges over zoom meetings, along with organizing two separate virtual merit badge universities, resulting in record-breaking numbers of merit badges earned in either troop; and

WHEREAS, summer 2021, Katy completed her Eagle Project where she organized the removal of Japanese Barberry, a harmful non-native invasive species, in a square acre of land in North Park, where it had become significantly overgrown; and

WHEREAS, Katy’s project allowed her to practice planning, organizing, and the necessary communication skills which are required for these types of service projects; and
